Falls jemand außerhalb Deutschlands noch nicht auf das hohe Niveau dieses Torhüters aufmerksam geworden war, so war es spätestens am 14. September vergangenen Jahres soweit: Beim Spitzenspiel zwischen RB Leipzig und Bayern München am 4. Spieltag der aktuellen Bundesliga-Saison zeigte Peter Gulacsi (abgesehen von einem kritischen Fehlpass relativ zu Beginn der Partie) eine der stärksten Torhüterleistungen der bisherigen Spielzeit. Ein ums andere Mal hielt er Leipzig zunächst im Spiel, ehe er im zweiten Durchgang wieder und wieder einen erneuten Rückstand verhinderte – besonders durch eine Glanztat in der Nachspielzeit, die dem Rekordmeister aus dem Süden der Republik sichere drei Punkte verwehrte.
Stammtorwart auf Umwegen
Dabei verlief die Karriere des ungarischen Nationaltorhüters zu Beginn alles andere als glatt: Nachdem er trotz seines früh entdeckten Talents und dem daraus resultierenden Wechsel zum MTK Budapest, der als zweiterfolgreichster Fußballverein Ungarns gilt, dort lediglich die Reservistenrolle einnehmen durfte, verpflichtete ihn im August 2007 (zunächst leihweise) kein geringerer als der FC Liverpool – Gulacsi war zu dieser Zeit gerade einmal 17 Jahre alt. Rückblickend betrachtet kam dieser Wechsel zu einem europäischen Schwergewicht in der Tat zu früh, denn der heute 29-Jährige verließ Liverpool vier Jahre später nach zahlreichen Leihen, ohne auch nur einen einzigen Einsatz für die Profis der Reds verbuchen zu können.
Mit dem Transfer zu RB Salzburg änderte sich dann alles. Gulacsi wurde nach seiner Ankunft zum Stammtorwart ernannt und sicherte sich in seiner Premierensaison in Österreich direkt den Titel des “besten Tormanns der Liga”. Die starken Leistungen zwischen den Pfosten blieben auch beim Schwesterklub in Leipzig nicht unbemerkt, sodass sich der Ungar nach zwei Saisons in Richtung Deutschland aufmachte. Dort debütierte er am 7. Februar 2016 in der 2. Bundesliga, indem er von einer Verletzung des eigentlichen Stammtorwarts Fabio Coltorti profitierte. Für Coltorti ein Ausfall mit Folgen, sollte er doch in der Folge nur noch zwei Spiele für RB Leipzig absolvieren und anschließend seine Karriere beenden.
Für Gulacsi hingegen war dieses Debüt ein Segen, denn seit diesem Tag ist er unangefochtener Stammtorhüter der Sachsen. Und das vollkommen zurecht, wenn man seine Fähigkeiten sowie seine Arbeitsmoral genauer unter die Lupe nimmt.
Durch harte Arbeit zur verdienten Chance
Schon in seiner Zeit bei MTK Budapest war er trotz fehlender Einsätze für sein herausragendes Engagement auf dem Trainingsplatz bekannt – nur logisch, bedenkt man doch, dass der FC Liverpool sich Gulacsi’s Dienste sicherte, ohne dass dieser auch nur eine einzige Minute im Profifußball absolviert hatte. Und obwohl er in England wie bereits erwähnt in jede Ecke des Landes verliehen wurde, blieb er seiner Einstellung treu und zeigte dort, wo er die Chance dazu bekam, gute Leistungen. So etwa bei den Tranmere Rovers in der Saison 2010/11, die unter anderem dank starker Auftritte des gebürtigen Budapesters die Klasse halten konnten.
Heute profitiert Gulacsi von seiner harten Arbeit, die ihn gepaart mit seinem Talent zu einem der besten Torhüter der Bundesliga, ja sogar Europas machen. Dies belegen seine eindrucksvollen Zahlen, besonders die der letzten eineinhalb Jahre. So konnte er in der Saison 2018/19 beeindruckende 77,6 % der Schüsse auf sein Tor parieren – Höchstwert in der Bundesliga und auch einer der besten Werte in ganz Europa. Dazu kamen 16 weiße Westen, womit er fast in der Hälfte seiner Spiele ohne Gegentreffer blieb. Auch in der aktuellen Spielzeit kassierten die Leipziger zusammen mit Bayern München die wenigsten Tore. Die Debatte, ob Gulacsi der beste Torwart der Liga ist, scheint bei Weitem nicht mehr an den Haaren herbeigezogen, auch wenn sein in dieser Sache ärgster Konkurrent aus dem Süden inzwischen wieder die Form erreicht hat, die ihm vor einigen Jahren zu vier Welttorhüter-Auszeichnungen verholfen haben.
Zu den größten Stärken des Leipziger Schlussmanns zählen sicherlich seine außergewöhnlichen Reflexe. Gerade in Verbindung mit seiner Bereitschaft, die Linie zu verlassen, macht ihn das zu einem Torwart, an dem sich Stürmer die Zähne ausbeißen. Nicht zuletzt weiß er im Spielaufbau zu überzeugen, durch gute Kommunikation mit seinen Teamkollegen und das schnelle Reagieren auf veränderte Situationen ist er in der Lage, das Spiel schnell zu machen – was einer Mannschaft wie RB Leipzig mit flinken Außenbahnspielern natürlich zugutekommt. Wenig überraschend also, dass Gulacsi in dieser Saison sogar schon ein Tor vorbereitet hat.
Leipzigs Perspektive als Argument für einen Verbleib?
Angesichts dieser Attribute scheint es fast schon irrsinnig, dass sein momentaner Marktwert laut Transfermarkt auf “gerade einmal” 9,5 Millionen Euro taxiert wird. Mit seinen 29 Jahren hat er gerade auf seiner Position noch einige Jahre auf höchstem Niveau vor sich und wäre sicherlich für diverse Top-Vereine in Europa eine immense Verstärkung.
Allen voran Julian Nagelsmann wird seine Nummer 1 jedoch sicher nicht ziehen lassen wollen. Dafür braucht es zwar die Perspektive, die kommenden Jahre um die Meisterschaft spielen zu können und auch in der Champions League für Furore zu sorgen, doch gibt es wohl nur wenige Vereine, wo diese besser ist, als bei RB – nicht zuletzt aufgrund eines ausgezeichneten Transfermanagements. Beispiel gefällig? Vor knapp fünf Jahren verpflichtete man einen Spieler für nur drei Millionen Euro, der heute europaweit als einer der besten 10 auf seiner Position gesehen wird. Sein Name? Peter Gulacsi.
