Trotz einer 0:1-Heimniederlage in den Aufstiegsplayoffs gegen Frosinone ist Spezia Calcio gestern Abend der erste Aufstieg in die Serie A in der Geschichte des Vereins gelungen. Denn schließlich hatte man das Hinspiel mit 1:0 gewonnen. Was zunächst für Stirnrunzeln sorgen dürfte (da die Meisten bei so einem Spielstand nach Hin- und Rückspiel eine Verlängerung erwarten würden), lässt sich mit dem komplexen Playoff-System der italienischen zweiten Liga erklären. Denn in diesem gehen die schlechter platzierten Mannschaften der Abschlusstabelle mit einem Handicap in die Aufstiegsrunde – und auch im Tabellenkeller gibt es so einige Besonderheiten. Aber der Reihe nach.
Zunächst sind zwei Dinge wichtig. Einerseits finden die Playoffs nur statt, wenn der Drittplatzierte am Ende weniger als zehn Punkte Vorsprung auf den Vierten hat, bei zehn oder mehr Zählern steigt der Dritte direkt auf. Außerdem sollte erwähnt werden, dass im Gegensatz zum englischen oder spanischen Unterhaus die Playoffs in der Serie B sechs statt vier Mannschaften beinhalten. Dementsprechend startet das Aufstiegsturnier mit zwei Viertelfinals (die Dritt- und Viertplatzierten der Liga steigen erst im Halbfinale ein), die in einem einzigen K.O.-Spiel ausgetragen werden, während Halbfinale und Finale durch Hin- und Rückspiel entschieden werden.
Das angesprochene Handicap des schlechter platzierten Teams bedeutet, dass dieses als Herausforderer über die zwei Spiele eine ‚bessere‘ Leistung abliefern muss als der Herausgeforderte. Im Fall des gestrigen Spiels zwischen Frosinone (8. der Abschlusstabelle) gegen Spezia (3.) bedeutet das also, dass Frosinone höher hätte gewinnen müssen als es Spezia im Hinspiel tat, etwa mit zwei Toren Vorsprung. Auch ein 2:1-Sieg hätte Frosinone nicht genutzt, eine Auswärtstorregel gibt es in diesem Fall nicht. Das sorgte beispielsweise im Playoff-Finale 2014/15 für Aufsehen, als Bologna nach einem 0:0 auswärts bei Pescara und einem 1:1 daheim im Rückspiel als Aufsteiger feststand, da sie in der Abschlusstabelle der Liga besser platziert waren – logisch.
Was auf den ersten Blick etwas dubios erscheint, hat seinen Ursprung in einem durchaus nachvollziehbaren Ansatz. Dass der Achtplatzierte einer Liga überhaupt die Chance erhält, durch ein Turnier doch noch aufzusteigen, ist ziemlich bemerkenswert. Diesen potenziellen Aufstieg müssen sich die Teams dann aber eben auch dadurch verdienen, dass man über 180 Minuten eine aktiv bessere Leistung zeigt als etwa der Drittplatzierte. Wenn nach Hin- und Rückspiel ein ausgeglichenes Ergebnis zu Buche steht, ist es durchaus gerechtfertigt, dass die über die komplette Saison bessere Mannschaft den Vorzug erhält.
Doch das ist längst nicht alles. Besonders interessant ist das System in den angesprochenen Viertelfinals, die in lediglich einem Spiel entschieden werden. Auch hier lässt sich das Ganze am leichtesten durch ein Praxisbeispiel erklären: Chievo Verona (als 6.) traf hier Anfang August auf Empoli (7.). Nach 90 Minuten stand es 0:0 – sollte nun also Chievo weiterkommen, da es ja kein Rückspiel gibt und Chievo in der Abschlusstabelle besser stand?
(Noch) nicht ganz. In diesem Fall gibt es noch eine Verlängerung. Wenn nach dieser allerdings der Herausforderer (hier Empoli) das Spiel immer noch nicht für sich entscheiden konnte, scheidet er (ohne Elfmeterschießen) aus. Die zusätzlichen 30 Minuten wirken hier wie eine Art Gnadenfrist, in denen das schlechter platzierte Team noch eine allerletzte Chance hat, doch irgendwie weiterzukommen. Empoli hat sich ein Weiterkommen übrigens durch zwei verschossene Elfmeter selber vermasselt.
So weit, so kurios. Doch auch der Blick in den Tabellenkeller lohnt sich, wo zunächst einmal die drei Letztplatzierten direkt absteigen. Wenn das fünftletzte Team nun am Ende der Saison fünf oder mehr Punkte Vorsprung auf den Viertletzten hat, steigt der Viertletzte auch direkt ab. Bei weniger als fünf Punkten Unterschied gibt es ein sogenanntes Playout zwischen den Beiden. Wie im Aufstiegsturnier gilt das Prinzip, dass der Herausforderer über Hin- und Rückspiel besser abschneiden muss, um sich retten zu können. Doch auch hier greift eine Sonderregel: Sollten beide Teams in der Abschlusstabelle gleich viele Punkte vorweisen, entfällt der Vorteil des Herausgeforderten und bei Gleichstand nach zwei Spielen gibt es eine Verlängerung und (falls erforderlich) sogar ein Elfmeterschießen.
Und wem der Kopf jetzt immer noch nicht raucht, dem sei Folgendes gesagt. Der Verband neigt gerne dazu, dieses System alle paar Jahre etwas zu ändern. Man darf gespannt sein, was die nächste Reform bereithält.
